How far in advance should I book my course with Nautilus? The further in advance the better as boat and captain availability fill up well in advance.
Fly into La Paz (airport code LAP) or with limited flights you may need to fly into San Jose Del Cabo (airport code SJD) and catch a shuttle across. Relax at the beach club until boarding time at 5pm, get settled aboard, meet the other students and go out for a delicious meal!
Do a chart briefing, systems overview and check all the equipment on the boat. Set sail for Espiritu Santo island, learn to anchor and then swim and enjoy the turquoise water. After some fun, do your first formal lessons aboard.
After a detailed look at engine operation and maintenance, head out and learn how to sail! You'II learn points of sail, sail theory, and then head out to practice your sail trim. Sail up the coast to Ensenada Grande, a beautiful bay with a great hike through the cactus forest.
After a brief morning lesson, motor up the coast to swim with the sea lions! Then, pop the sails and chart a course for one of the most famous anchorages in the Sea of Cortez, called "The Hook". Anchor off the white sand beach, paddle board, and hike the ridge trail.
Go for an early morning snorkel and then take one of your ASA tests. The afternoon challenge is to circumnavigate the island under sail, without your instructors help. We then sail up to the little fishing village of San Evaristo, and if Lupe and Maggie's is open, go ashore for fresh grilled fish tacos.
Chart a course and set sail for Bonanza beach over 30 nautical miles away. Troll fishing lures and hope for fresh fish for dinner. This will be a fun passage! We will stop for lunch at one of the many stunning anchorages for a swim and to wrap up another test. By this point you will be in charge of all the charting, navigation, sail trim and be the captains for this leg.
After a leisurely morning exploring the long white sandy beach, we weigh anchor and sail back to marina Costabaja for docking practice. Friday night we will go out to celebrate all our new captains, then spend that final night on the boat.
We are off the boat by 8am and you are free to fly home, or take a couple of extra days to explore the area! You can swim with whale sharks in the bay outside of La Paz, go scuba diving or head an hour south to La Ventana to learn how to Kiteboard.
“We were looking for a sailing school that would accommodate our entire family in the process. We have children, and plan to sail with them in the future, so we wanted them to be learning too. Nautilus was great to work with and it felt like they really understood our personal goals. They worked with us to achieve our goals and we are very pleased with the experience!
Our instructor (JJ) was excellent and we had great sailing weather! We completed all the certifications that we set out to earn, and we should be receiving our seals from ASA soon!”
