How far in advance should I book my course with Nautilus? The further in advance the better as boat and captain availability fill up well in advance.
Catch an international flight into Papeete the capital of Tahiti (airport code PPT). From there it's a short flight with Air Tahiti to the island of Raiatea. Drop your bags off at the office and stroll into the town of Raiatea. Grab an espresso and a pastry at the boulangerie while you wait to board the boat. We board at 5pm, get settled and head out to a local restaurant.
Do a chart briefing, systems overview and check all the equipment on the boat. Set sail for a remote anchorage on the west side of the island, and perhaps we will spot some whales on the way? We then have time to explore the uninhabited island, and snorkel the lagoon. After some fun, do your first formal lessons aboard and then dinghy in to an amazing French restaurant ashore that serves incredible dishes.
After a detailed look at engine operation and maintenance, head out and learn how to sail! You II learn points of sail, sail theory, and then head out to practice your sail trim. It's then a passage up to Bora Bora. Such a treat so sail into this beautiful South Seas paradise and pick up a mooring in the western lagoon. After mooring practice we see if the local manta rays are the in area to snorkel with.
After a brief morning lesson, and our first ASA test, the challenge for the day is to sail up and around the north end of the island! Dinner tonight is at Bloody Marys, one of the most famous seafood restaurants in Tahiti, that has been the haunt of celebrities.
Today it up early to sail back to the island of Tahaa. Once anchored off the exclusive Le Tahaa resort, we will snorkel one of the most incredible places on the planet called the Coral Gardens. A slow current allows you to drift through mind boggling coral formations and the most beautiful tropical fish you've ever seen.
Today we get a chance to circumnavigate the island of Tahaa! First stop is a local pearl farm where we will get to see and hear first hand how the luxurious black pearls are raised. It's then off to tour a vanilla plantation that produces some of the most aromatic and prized vanilla in the world!
After a morning swim, snorkel and paddle board, we do docking practice and then set sail for Miri Miri pass on the west side of Raiatea. We anchor in a beautiful lagoon and have a chance to explore one of the tiny islands just inside the reef. We then dinghy ashore to a fabulous restaurant to celebrate all the new captains!
This morning we are up early to motor back to the marina. We are off the boat by 8am and you are free to fly home, or take a couple of extra days to explore the rest of the area!
“Nautilus was great to work with every step of the way. We got to the catamaran and met our instructor, Troy Mills. We can’t say enough about how great Troy was. He got a good feel for our level of knowledge and ability, and then combined teaching and application at a pace that didn’t bore us or overwhelm us. That takes someone who can really get in tune with their students.
We had an absolutely thrilling vacation and ended the week confident in our sailing abilities. French Polynesia is a place we will sail again, and we were lucky to get Troy as an instructor. I’ve already recommended Nautilus and Troy to another couple who are looking to get their ASA certifications.”
